It came into force on 1st October 1862 and remains in effect to this day, with some amendments over time. It is a comprehensive code, covering a wide range of offences including murder, theft, rape and cheating. The code has been amended several times since it was first enacted, with the latest being in 2013 by the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013 . Prior to that there were significant amendments made in 1983 and again 2006 .
The Major Sections of The IPC: There are five sections under which all crimes have been classified under IPC i) Section A ufffd Of Punishments; ii) Section B ufffd Of Offences Against Public Justice; iii) Section C ufffd Of Offences Affecting The Human Body; iv) Section D ufffd Of Offences Affecting Property; v)Of General Exceptions .
Why Was The IPC Enacted?: Under British rule , different regions were governed by different sets of laws leading to great confusion and chaos . To put an end to this problem , Lord Macaulay introduced a uniform criminal code which would be applicable throughout India . After much discussion and debate ,the draft prepared by him was finally passed as ufffdThe Indian Penal Codeufffd or ufffdIPCufffdin 1860 .It came into force from 1st October ,1862 .
What Are The Key Features Of The IPC?: Some key features of IPC are as follows :- i) clear definition of criminal offence ; ii ) detailed classification of crime ;iii ) provision for punishment according to severity of offence ; iv ) no place for personal vengeance or private retribution ; v ) equality before law regardless caste , creed or religion ; vi ) effective check against arbitrary useof power .
